She reports that her 15 years as an instructor in the Correction Education Program for Indiana State University and Ivy Tech Community College was her most fulfilling role. Dr. Reynolds has a passion for the history of Indiana State University and Terre Haute in general. She has spent decades uncovering this remarkable history. She has received several honors for her groundbreaking research in the areas of local history and the history of people of color. She is the author of The History of the African American Student Experience at Indiana State University and is a contributor to the upcoming history of Indiana State University, Volume 2. Dr. Reynolds nominator had this to say, “Dr. Reynolds has been relentless in making the community aware of the history of African-Americans in the Terre Haute community. She has written numerous articles regarding historical figures in the community and establishing historical markers and remembrances such as the Willa Brown display of the first black aviator at the Hulman Center Airport. She is currently working on the establishment of the statute of Frederick Douglass, commemorating his visit to Terre Haute, the George Ward Pavilion, in honor of George Ward who was lynched under the Wabash River Bridge, and is also working on holding a commemorative meeting for Clarence Walker, the first African American to be allowed to play in a post-season basketball game when he played for Coach John Wooden at Indiana State Teacher’s College in 1948.” Dr. Reynolds has accomplished so much within her education, research, and drive for the community. Listed are just a few of the projects she has had a hand in achieving the goal to uncover the hidden African American history of Terre Haute. She has been successful in these projects. She states, “while these projects focus on African Americans… that is one of my primary objectives…but I also research people of color and women in general as demonstrated by my bi weekly article in the Tribune Star.” See below… https://www.reporter.net/indiana/news/terre-haute-woman-seeks-to-rid-ebay-of-racist-items/article_6a0c82f4-fc77-11ec-980e-1776312a7d39.html https://www.tribstar.com/features/valley_life/historical-treasure-first-female-mayor-of-chicago-has-vigo-county-ties/article_d8c02a88-4e2b-11ed-adbd-cb73b6058c6f.html https://www.wthitv.com/archive/local-historian-pushes-for-more-recognition-of-the-first-african-american-woman-pilot-in-the/article_180b7532-c15f-5f7a-9a5e-c4043b7d7fda.html https://www.tribstar.com/news/local_news/airport-officials-approve-pilot-willa-b-brown-display/article_e0239e27-7157-5636-b8db-1ed676473348.html https://sports.yahoo.com/isu-names-street-alum-diplomat-035900062.html https://www.wthitv.com/news/historian-looks-to-bring-frederick-douglass-monument-to-downtown-terre-haute/article_7eef1edc-66af-11ed-b6f2-afa3e3f96b4f.html We are honored to recognize an extraordinary dedicated individual like Dr. Crystal Reynolds. Marla Flowers is currently the Executive Director for the Vigo County Historical Museum but has worn many hats over the years within the Wabash Valley Community (along with having a past obsession with actually wearing hats)! Marla no doubt exemplifies what a community leader is. This is what the 2022 Miracle on 7th Street Board of Directors and Volunteer Committee had to say, “If you attended any of the events around Miracle on 7th Street this year you can thank the “relentless” team behind the event, a group of volunteers passionate about Christmas and the community. At the helm of the team was Vigo County History Center Executive Director Marla Flowers. Miracle on 7th Street, a 501c3 non-profit organization not only organizes the “unofficial” kick off to the holiday season, but over the last 14 years the group has raised thousands of dollars and literally TONS of food which is donated to numerous charities and food banks across the Wabash Valley. While the event is a great time, it’s what happens after the Miracle - donation checks are written to a handful of charities - that really makes the holiday season special. Leading those efforts is Marla (along with Miracle President Terry Hogan). For months, Marla worked with the Miracle committee to bring yearly traditions and exciting new elements to the Miracle. Igloos on Wabash Ave? Let’s do it! Additional vendor tents? Make it happen! Musical performances by local artists? Let’s rock! No idea was too small or too big. With each idea and plan, Marla was determined to accomplish it. Even when we thought the entire event would be blown - literally with 50 MPH winds on the Friday of Miracle - Marla found a way to make it happen. Coordinating with Mayor Duke Bennett, they bolted the igloos to the street and continued with the event. The weekend’s wind stopped and the rest of Miracle was a huge success with nearly $20,000 collected this year to continue the mission of Miracle on 7th Street. While impressive, this is just one example of Marla’s “relentless” spirit. Since taking over the History Center, admission numbers have grown, event participation has increased and the museum continues to thrive with new exhibits, rental events and community programs. Marla’s efforts to support and improve our community is also “relentless” with her involvement in countless organizations over the years including the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce, United Way of the Wabash Valley, Downtown Terre Haute, Junior Achievement, Chances and Services for Youth and more. She also serves on the Union Hospital Finance Committee. In the past, Flowers served on the board of both the Indiana United Way and the United Way of the Wabash Valley. She is a past recipient of the Athena Award, the United Way of the Wabash Valley Richard Newport Award and the Junior Achievement Business Person of the Year Award. She is also a Wabash Valley Women of Influence recipient as well as a 2014 Terre Haute Dancing with the Stars champion. Thank you Marla for leading our team, always making us laugh and pushing us to think big. Your RELENTLESS spirit inspires each of us.” Truly an inspiration, Marla’s nominator had this to say when asked why they think she deserves to be recognized as Relentless. “Marla Flowers is a dedicated servant leader in the community. For most of her career, she’s spent countless hours volunteering for community events, leading the charge to help bring resources to our community, and moving the needle to help Terre Haute become a place where people want to live. Marla has been instrumental with the Miracle on 7th Street, she danced (and won) in the Terre Haute Dancing with the Stars fundraiser, specifically working to raise money for a renovated kitchen at the Booker T Washington Community Center, and has worked to promote Downtown Terre Haute (serving as the co-chair for that committee). These are just a few of the many committees, programs, and events Marla gives her time and talent to make a success. Terre Haute is blessed to have Marla Flowers and I can’t think of a more deserving person nominated for the Relentless Campaign.” We are honored to recognize an extraordinary dedicated individual like Marla. Alison Lane was born at Union Hospital in Terre Haute and has lived in Sullivan her entire life. Actually, all but nine months have been spent on the same street. She graduated from Sullivan High School in 1998, and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Indiana State University in 2002. Alison has been married to her husband Joshua for 20 years. They have one daughter, Audree, who is a 7th grader at Sullivan Middle School. Alison and Joshua are also Foster Parents, and currently have two sweet baby boys living with them. Alison teaches first grade at Sullivan Elementary School, with this being her 8th year at Sullivan. Prior to Sullivan, she taught Kindergarten in Vigo County for 12 years. This is her 20th year of teaching and she absolutely adores teaching the kids in the community. When she is not teaching the youth, she loves attending Broadway Shows and watching college football games on Saturday’s. She loves shopping, walking, and dancing, where she teaches at Studio 3:4 on Monday nights. Crafting is also an activity she enjoys, but can get tricky with little ones at home. She says, “buying Christmas presents for everyone is one of my favorite things to do every year!” Disney and Anna Maria Island are the family favorites for vacation however, Alison says “I don’t know if you can beat just spending the day with family and friends, sharing dinners with lots of laughs.” Alison is currently the secretary on the City Park Board and has previously been involved with Tri Kappa. She is also a member of Shelburn First Baptist Church. At the church, she is involved with children’s ministries, teaching Sunday morning classes, and she is also the Vacation Bible School Director. Instilling her love for dance, she is the dance team Coach for 5th/6th grade. Alison’s big drive is the founding of Casey’s Kicks. This is an organization that was started after her step-brother Casey passed away in an unfortunate motorcycle accident in March of 2012. Casey’s mother, Angie Wilson wanted to start something in his memory. The whole family came together to brainstorm what would be fitting. They knew they wanted something he loved. Shoes!! He loved shoes! Alison recalls him shining his mining boots nightly. He constantly had clean tennis shoes on and would tell everyone to be careful not to get his “kicks” dirty. One time when he was in elementary school, he came home and told his father, Mike Drake, that there was a little boy at school whose shoes were falling apart and begged him to buy the little boy shoes. This was the starting point. The family knew what they wanted to focus on and all pitched in some money and donated it to the school for them to purchase shoes for a family in need. That was the first year, after that, Casey’s Kicks was established. Alison says, “What we discovered by doing this, was it helped our hurting hearts, and we wanted to keep giving back to our community. We decided to take a step further the following year, and turn it into an annual fundraiser. Casey’s birthday was August 12th. Our fundraiser is held on a weekend close to his birthday each year. It truly takes all of us to put this fun evening on! Casey’s mother, Angie, puts together the performance part, Beth Drake, prepares the food (which is always Italian, since it was Casey’s favorite), and I, along with some awesome and dedicated friends, pull together the silent auction/advertisement/dessert part of the fundraiser. I also total the pledges, and figure the monetary donations that are awarded to the schools. We have chosen to take the tragedy of Casey’s death and turn it into mercy, love, and compassion for others by spreading love and kindness through the donation of shoes, remembering him always.” We are honored to recognize an extraordinary dedicated individual like Alison. Kathy Sturgeon was born and raised in Terre Haute, currently residing in Riley with her husband Roger. Kathy and Roger have created a wonderful family with five kids and eleven grandkids. Kathy worked at the Vigo County School Corporation for ten years as a bus driver and also at the transportation office. She helped run Sturgeons Farm for eight years. This was a great family venue with lots of activities including corn mazes, hayrides (haunted at night), a pumpkin patch for families to pick their own pumpkins, music, bonfires, corn box (instead of sand box), and straw mazes for the little ones. This was located at the family farm. In 2015, Kathy opened a venue called The Main Event located on Margaret Drive. Her goal was to provide a beautiful space to host a variety of events such as weddings, sporting events, corporate and fundraising events. This is entirely possible on the forty-two acres that the event space is located on including an eight acre meadow and pond. Her family is the center of her world and she loves any activity that they can enjoy together. While the family keeps her plenty busy, Kathy also donates a lot of her time supporting the Happiness Bag - Home, the NRA, Riley Lions Club, Ducks Unlimited, CASA, and the Wild Turkey Federation. Each one brings joy to help out where needed, especially donating The Main Event for their activities. Kathy also enjoys attending auctions as a hobby. Besides her family, her passion is truly hosting weddings and taking the stress off the bride/groom and their families. She wants the day to be as magical as possible and something they always remember. Some may describe her as the “crazy aunt” that is there to help with anything and everything during their big day! Kathy has a giant heart and the desire to help others. She is another example of the “relentless” mindset that we love seeing in the community. Keep up the great work Kathy! When asked “What do you think makes Terre Haute different from other communities” Cathy stated, “Haute hospitality is one of a kind. The community works collectively to put people first with all the unique styles that are offered. The past couple of years have been anything but normal. Jobs, school, shopping, healthcare, you name it. It is difficult to effectively do your job and participate in trainings and build up engagement via Zoom. So of course, we were excited to learn that CENTURY 21 would be holding the National Conference in person for 2022 at Caesars Forum in Las Vegas. Las Vegas didn’t know what was coming! The CENTURY 21 Elite Terre Haute office put together a large group to attend. The anticipation for the event built for months and now we get to hear from one of our newest agents and what she took away from the Conference. Here is a little background about what the National Conference provides. CENTURY 21 holds a National Conference every year called, The One21 Experience. This includes CENTURY 21 offices from across the globe. Literally. This opportunity that was created is an exceptional way for Agents, Office Administrators, Managing Brokers, Marketing/PR, Corporate Personnel, and anyone working within CENTURY 21 to elevate their knowledge and expand their networking with brand experts and world class vendors. This event not only provides learning opportunities but also vendors of all sorts to help expand and market your business with the right tools. CENTURY 21 Elite obviously did not want to miss out on such a great opportunity. Sarah Clark became an agent with C21 Elite in January. She is focused on growing her new business and learning all that she can. Sarah has already proven herself to be a very valuable member of the team. We wanted to get the feedback from a newly licensed agent that has never experienced a Conference like this before. Let’s see what she thought. “CENTURY 21 hosts a Conference each year where agents from all over the world come together to learn, network, and share knowledge. This year it was in beautiful LAS VEGAS. As an agent of only a few months – I jumped at the chance to attend the conference when a spot became available… best decision ever! The conference was four days full of informational classes led by experienced agents and guest speakers. Among the guest speakers were Greg Sexton, COO of CENTURY 21, Alex Banayan, a #1 International Best-Selling Author, and Dominique Dawes, an Olympian and Hall of Fame Gymnast. Attendees were free to choose which classes were most beneficial for growing their business. As a new agent, I attended classes that would give me knowledge to grow my client list and provide top notch customer service. I had the privilege of sitting in on panels composed of the top listing agents within the CENTURY 21 franchise. They each spoke about their different approach that led to success. It was eye opening to see the amount of time and effort they put in when they first started and compared it with the amazing results that followed. From cold calling, creating a database to streamline communication, sending post cards, or posting on social media, each speaker brought a different experience to the panel. I also attended social media workshops (somewhere I struggle) that were beneficial for a new agent when trying to reach clients. It was eye opening to see the many ways that you can build relationships that I did not think of – Facebook groups with other agents, TikTok, and Reels on Instagram. Social media can be such a beneficial tool, and since Conference I have worked to better my platforms. Even though we are all affiliated with CENTURY 21, we are all independent contractors, so we spend little time in the office or around our co-workers. When not in classes, we spent time networking – with fellow Elite agents and with agents from other markets. The classes teach so much, but just being in the presence of experienced agents for four days can be so valuable. I spent a lot of time asking questions to fellow agents, but also just sat back and listened to the group talk, I was able to retain so much. This conference was a great experience to see first-hand how CENTURY 21 reinvests into their agents and continue to develop them. The CEO, Mike Miedler, spoke about his passion for community service, real estate, and his agents, making me proud to represent CENTURY 21. The brand also does a great job of acknowledging top producing agents. I left Vegas motivated to set goals and push myself to accomplish them, so I too could be recognized in the future. I am determined to enjoy the Award Winner Lounge– mark my words! Now we were not ALL BUSINESS, we also had time to enjoy beautiful Las Vegas. We spent time exploring what all Vegas has to offer in shopping, food, and sights. Overall, the conference was extremely helpful and a great experience for a new or tenured agent. I look forward to attending next year and seeing how much I have grown as an agent. See you next year Orlando!” Here are a few testimonials from other agents that attended from the Elite office: “Overall, it was a great experience. I was able to get to know the other agents in my office and take away new tools to help grow my business.” – Maddie Hayes, New Agent “It was a great opportunity to connect with agents both locally and from other markets. The classes were exceptional and provided great insight in current trends and ideas.” – Brandon Halleck, Experienced Agent “My first conference was exciting and rewarding. Talking and learning with other real estate agents from all over the nation was eye opening and so helpful. Being able to hang out with my co-workers outside of the office was a blast!” – Taylor Austin, New Agent We look forward to our 2023 National Conference next March in Orlando. We are always elevating our education and leveling up our expertise to better serve our clients. CENTURY 21 ELITE celebrates the extraordinary with The Relentless Campaign. On average, a single-family home inspection usually takes 2-4 hours to complete, though this is heavily dependent on the of the size and condition of the home. After the inspection process, we will send the client an inspection report (within 24 hours) that covers our findings, complete with pictures, analysis, and recommendations. So who is your Inspector? When choosing your home inspector there are many questions to consider. - Are they licensed? Indiana requires all inspectors to be licensed and insured. - Do they have industry affiliations? Like ASHI (American Society of Home Inspectors) - What extra services do they provide? Termite, Radon, water quality, mold etc. Wilson & Sons is a family owned business founded in Terre Haute, Indiana in 2018.
